I just discovered your blog today and really enjoyed reading through it. Thank you so much for sharing your story... we are in the process of sorting out where to go from being told straight off, donor eggs or adoption, and its great reading other people's paths to parenthood. It gives me hope.

I also think that it is not creepy or strange at all that you are in frequent contact with the birthmom. It makes a lot of sense to me. It just sounds like you are keen to leave open the possibility of what you hoped for:

"I have seen adoption done really beautifully. Where it really works. Where all the parents commit to a child. Where love works in a way no one imagined. Where I think that maybe just maybe this will be okay. Different, but okay."

A complete stranger's two cents about open adoption:

My daughter's birthmother chose to stop contact with us when my daughter was around 4 years old, because of pressure to do so. Eight years later, she's found she cannot "just move on", and my child is having a meeting, in a few weeks, that she has been begging God for for at least three years.

It's the unknowns that terrify or tantalize us. The more our children know about where they came from, the healthier we all are.

Hi, Bebe:

Just got the news from a fellow blogger (Millie) that we are in the same locale. We adopted our beautiful AA daughter in October (so she is about five months) and would love to get together sometime. She is also lactose intolerant, although our pediatrician diagnosed it right away -- yay, doc!

DH is a stay at home dad and I'm not sure of your situation, but we really would like to meet other transracial adoptive families in the area. Feel free to e-mail and hope to hear from you soon . . .

I'm African American and I've never heard that MOST AA are lactose intolerant. This is my first time reading your blog, so I'm guessing that this was a transracial aoption. Just wanted to drop you a note about that. I know that he % if higher in AA, but I don't not believe it is the majority. I's discuss with your dr. ;-)

Open adoptions can work. I am glad that they can. We are spending memorial day with the birth family and a big cookout! Contacted the birthmom just this am. Things are cool.

Family is funny sometimes, but being open helps everyone in the long run *imho*

Go with your heart. Ask your family what they are afraid of, but do what you have to do for you and your son and his mom. No one can deny that the three of you are connected.
